Introduction to Basket Weaving
Adult Class
Level: All Levels

Baskets can be used for gathering herbs, drying them and as containers for our sacred objects. Various plants can be prepared for weaving into baskets, such as willow, Iris leaves and pine needles. The easiest basketry material to learn with is reed, as it only requires soaking prior to weaving. This tutorial will demonstrate weaving a simple basket using basic tools and how to naturally dye your reed. Whether a basket is created for functional, artistic or ceremonial purposes, baskets can only be created by hand and not by a machine. Weaving a basket is a meditative artform and connects us to our ancestors who relied on their hands and plants for healing.

Motherwort and Magick
All Ages
Level: All Levels

Working with plant allies can bring Magick to your daily life. Plant allies are those herbs, plants and trees with whom you have cultivated an intentional reciprocal relationship. In this workshop we will discuss how Magickal spells work and cast a sacred circle so that we can meet the spirit of Motherwort, an herb that tends to bring us powerfully back to our center.
Motherwort grants a new level of confidence and recalls an inner strength by reducing stress and disquiet. Motherwort tends toward strengthening the Divine Feminine. As an emmenagogue, it is used to stimulate blood flow in the pelvic area and uterus and stimulates menstruation. It enhances fertility while reducing anxiety associated with childbirth, postpartum depression, and menopause.
In my experience Motherwort has been a firm teacher of boundaries and perspective – like a resolute mother or the Wheel of Fortune tarot card that grants you permission and fortitude to determine the way you view your outcome.

Through Motherwort, this workshop will reveal how we can access the Magick that pulses all around us and infuse the powerful connection with the natural world into our daily lives.

Erin-Lester_RedEarth.jpg

Erin Lester

As a child, my family camped every summer and then, at 13, we spent a month backpacking through Europe. These experiences opened my eyes to this vast and wonderful world. I have always been interested in deep culture and learning the customs of our ancestors. Up until recently I've enjoyed traveling and working around the world and across America. When I had my second child, my daughter, I felt a deep desire to live closer to nature, ground myslef and focus my energy at home, growing alongside my husband, two children, dog and three cats.

As big as this world is, connection and community makes it feel small and gives me a deep sense of joy. Communities I currently hold dear are my family, my Pralaya yoga community, my Ayurveda teacher, good friends near and far, local homeschool families, my mountain friends, and the beautiful women of Red Earth. I've also enjoyed being part of the birth community in Houston and, recently, local knitting and crocheting community.

I feel so blessed to be a part of Red Earth and that my daughter gets to grow up learning ancient healing traditions and honoring her moon 🌙.

I currently fill my days homeschooling my kiddos, playing and moving in nature, teaching yoga, providing digital support to small businesses, serving on the Mountain Peoples Coop board of directors and serving as the Sponsorship Coordinator for Red Earth.

Microdosing Psilocybin with Chronic Illness: Finding the Sacred in
Normality

Adult Class
Level: All Levels

The popularity of psilocybin seems to be exponentially on the rise in the US, with Denver and Oakland decriminalizing it.  However, they are still federally listed as a Schedule I drug, which means they are drugs which are not considered to have any legitimate medical use and selling them is still a felony. Despite these dire restrictions, some studies on psilocybin have been shown to effectively help depression, chronic pain, anxiety, addictions and PTSD.  Micro-dosing with a chronic illness and its subsequent accompanied pain can possibly help many.  Different experts have varied ideas on how best to micro-dose, and we will review the information from all sources to discover how finding the sacred and spiritual in the present and its often-mundane, day-to-day moments can greatly affect our quality of life.

Introduction to Alcohol Extractions (tinctures) by Maceration
Adult Class
Level: All Levels

We’ll cover all aspects of creating your own tinctures for your home apothecary from a beginner level to advanced! We’ll start by covering the folk method, starting with some basic rules about wildcrafting and sustainability awareness, then moving on to choosing the best dried herbs based on organoleptic testing. We’ll discuss how to make this process easy-peasy for beginners, and how to start building your apothecary from there. In addition, we’ll cover more advanced tincturing techniques such as the weight-to-volume ratio, and best resources to create your formulas from.

We will taste-test different alcohols, like vodka, brandy, everclear and organic cane alcohol, and we will take-test one herb in several different alcohols to compare. The entire tincturing process will be hands-on in class and will contain different straining ideas and techniques. I’ll include a brief history of alcohol, and the additional information on the important aspects of storing, labeling and dosages for size, age and children. If we have time, we’ll cover fresh plant tincturing, including using the wilting process to more calculate the amount of water in a plant. After leaving this class, if you’re a beginner, I want you to feel comfortable enough to create your own herbal medicine for yourself and your family, and if you are more advanced, I want you to feel comfortable enough to try a new technique in your medicine-making!
